The problem, as Luke saw it, was that Christian had simply stopped caring. It was obvious from his computer that he planned on leaving the FBI once he finished with Ted Hinson. He planned to simply walk into Tedâs house, find the women or the womenâs bodies (Christian wasnât sure if they were dead), and then kill Hinson.
Christian, apparently, was okay with doing jail time if necessary.
Luke had to stop that from taking placeânot the jail time, but Christian killing Hinson just yet.
Luke walked into Tommyâs office, shutting the door behind him.
Tommy held the phone to his ear and looked at Luke questioningly.
Luke motioned for him to hang up the phone.
âHey, something just came up thatâs pretty important. Can I call you back in a few minutes? ⦠Sure. Thanks a lot.â He put the phone down. âI hope this is important. That was the cop who found the body from yesterday.â
âChristian,â Luke said. âI think heâs about to do something very foolish.â
âWhat do you mean?â
Luke walked across the room and stood behind the chair in front of Tommyâs desk. âHeâs going after Hinson.â
âHow do you know?â
âHe told me, in so many words.â
âWhat? When?â Tommy asked.
âLast night. He showed up late like he used to.â
âWhat exactly did he say?â
âBasically, that he couldnât stand by while people were being kidnapped. Not even if Waverly directed him to.â
âJesus Christ,â Tommy said. âWhat did you tell him?â
âThat he needed to calm down.â
The two men stared at each other for a moment as Tommy thought.
âIs he here today?â
âYes,â Luke said. âIn his office.â
âWell, letâs go down there.â Tommy started to stand.
âThink that through. What will happen if we walk down there? Heâll say he has no such plans and then stop telling me whatever he is thinking.â
Tommy sat back down. âSo what do we do?â
âFirst, you canât tell him I told you this, okay?â
âWhy?â Tommy asked.
âBecause, it violates trust he put in me. If he asks, just say you figured it out.â
âFine. It wonât really matter if the guy kills someone. What are we going to do?â
âWe have to follow him,â Luke said. âWe have to catch him in the act, right before he makes his move.â
âPut a tail on Christian? Thatâs what youâre suggesting?â
Luke nodded, his face solemn. âBut not anyone else. You and me. I donât want to get him in trouble, which is what will happen if we put someone else on him. Weâll take turns watching. I donât think it will take long.â
Tommy shook his head and looked at his desk. âAlice ⦠Sheâll understand, I suppose.â He looked back up. âYouâre sure about this?â
âI wouldnât bring it to you if I wasnât.â
âGoddamnit. Arenât either of the two shrinks that heâs seeing helping him at all? Heâs losing his mind. He really is.â
âWhen we catch him in the act, we give him an ultimatum: either he sincerely gets help and willingly steps aside for a few months, or we go to Waverly.â
Tommy sighed. âOkay. How do we do
